The DB9 from Diamondback firearms in a true gem!
Some time ago we had the opportunity to visit Diamondback Firearms in Florida. I must admit, upon arrival I was absolutely blown away by the facility and the employees who worked there. In all my ventures to manufacturing plants across the world, I don’t think I have ever seen one that is as clean and as thoughtfully put together as Diamondback. When you see the sheer amount of product that they are putting out each day, you will understand why their plant must be this way. It’s impressive, to say the least.
Walking the shop floor, it’s apparent that the AR-15 rifle makes up a large bulk of their business. They have become extremely popular over the last decade because of the quality and features that you get for the money. Rounding the corner, a noticed a small batch of DB9 pistols and was immediately impressed. Of all the products I saw that day, the DB9 was the one I wanted to get my hands on.
When I got the call that my DB9 had arrived, I couldn’t wait to get to my local gun store to retrieve it. The very first thing I noticed when opening the box was the dovetail sights that were on the rear slide. I later learned that these sights are Glock compatible, and this gives the user a lot of options as to how they want to set their firearm up. I also loved the extended magazine, which gave this small pistol a full hand grip, making it feel very secure in your hand.
I did a little research on the DB9 and learned that the first generations of them did not come with a slide lock, but this is something the company later added in new generations, and the DB9 we have today had the slide lock feature added. It also now shoots +P ammo, it even says so on the ejection port! I like that in a 9mm because ammo choice really needs to be a huge concern with this round. I always load my 9mm with good frangible ammunition to try and limit damage past your intended target.
Holster selection for the DB9 can be found just about anywhere. Due to the width of this firearm being less than 1 inch, it really makes the perfect IWB concealed firearm. Our holster of choice for the DB9 is the Kinetic Concealment KC Baby. It has a single belt clip, small leather backing, and nice neoprene inside backing making it super comfortable. We also tried the DB9 in the Galco Fanny Pack. It fit perfectly. If you are running or going somewhere where extra body storage is a concern, the Galco fanny pack is the perfect choice with the DB9. As a matter of fact, the DB9 is so thin and lightweight, you forget you are wearing it.
Shooting it at the range was a breeze. The DB9 did well. Although we only ran ball head Federal ammo through it, it ate everything we gave it, and we only had one malfunction out of 200 rounds. I would say for a break-in period, that’s impressive. I would also say that the malfunction could have very well been my fault from a possible limp wrist situation. Center mass was the target, and at 10 yards, the DB9 was extremely accurate and consistent.
The only thing we would look to add to the DB9 would be a front frame rail. It seems like that would be an easy thing to add in future models and maybe Diamondback will consider this in the future. Even still, as the handgun is now, it really is a great selection for personal carry and defense. The DB9 from Diamondback Firearms is truly a contender and holds its own in the conceal carry world!
